1. What is the most challenging thing about personal shopping and styling?
The most challenging part about being a personal shopper/stylist is convincing a stranger (who is also your client) that you can make them happy. Having confidence can be a challenge for me at times but by knowing about different body types, brands, styles, trends etc…you are prepared. So when you start talking you sound like you know what’s going on. Not to say I’ve never had to improvise while working but I have to do that when I am shopping for myself. Staying on your fashion game is crucial.
2. What is an absolute must-have piece of clothing that every women should have in their closet?
One piece of clothing every woman should have is a really tough one…..I think it would be a nice bag. It doesn’t have to be loud or huge or expensive. A lot of my lady clients have these really sad nylon sacks or even juvenile bland backpacks. A grown-up “nice” bag.
3. You seem to know your jeans. What is your favorite jeans brand and why?
So my favorite brand of jean for myself right now are Citizens of Humanity. The pair I love are skinny and kind of “jeaggin-ish’” (aka jean leggin) but still really thick like a beautiful soft denim. I have very narrow hips and not much junk or trunk but these still manage to give my that “happy ass” every woman is looking for in the mirror when they try jeans on.
4. What is your advice on cleaning the closet and getting rid of clothes you never wear? Where to start? What to get rid of?
There are some who say every season it’s good to update your wardrobe. I have also heard some beliefs that every time you buy something new you get rid of something old that you may not wear so much… or you may wear it too much! I think anytime is a good time to evaluate your closet. Start with clothes that don’t fit or your REALLY NEVER WEAR. Get rid of items that don’t make you feel good. Bye, bye and ta-ta! A clothes swap, aka “naked lady party” is a fun way to get rid of some thing and acquire some new looks for free.
5. Wedges or Stilettos?
Wedges or stilettos? I say, have both. Give yourself choice. Although I am more of a stiletto chick, I got the cutest black and white, striped wedges made in Spain, at a Bachelorette Party. There was a clothing swap as part of the fun. Score! I love wearing them to bbq’s and parks outside fest’s. They work on grass much better than the stilettos. Don’t get me wrong I love my stilettos and have sacrificed comfort many a day or night for style.
I also asked Sarah to show us her Fall 2010 fashion must-haves. Here is her advice.
1. A striped shirt. Its trendy to wear one now, but I don’t remember when it was ever out of style. It’s a classic and staple. Since it is a trendy piece now you can find them in a variety of different cuts, style sand fabrics that suit your needs. This one here is a Petite Bateau example from Chickdowntown
2. Harem pants. My mom did not allow me to wear “hammer pants” in the early 90′s. She said they looked ridiculous and would not buy them for me. So I missed that boat as a youth. Now that I am a grown up and buy my own clothes, I am excited that the trend is back and better than ever. Here is a pair of Guess harem pants .
3. A sexy but edgy boot that you can stomp around in. The more you live in them the better they look. Here is a one look from Fiorentini + Baker “Pegin” Boot. Find them on Shirise.
4. Melissa by Vivienne Westwoods Anglomania + Lady Dragon !!! I am getting a pair as we speak from Zappos. These are hot!
